Friends

Image
(Twitter friends circle from about six months ago.) This is a blog I wrote back in 2006.  I think it fits in nicely with current events. My friends. How many times do we read or say that during the day? A most  INACCURATE statement or thought. A friend can be ... a friend in need or a friend indeed... a best friend... an occasional  friend... a fly-by-night friend... but never a ...MY friend. My...( according to Funk and  Wagnalls) is: the possessive case of the pronoun I. We don't possess our friends. They are free spirits ... vested with the power to come and go at will. No law states that they are required to be there for us at our beck and call in every situation...nowhere is it written that a friend must put aside all their own hurts and difficulties and come running to offer a shoulder every time we whimper. These things, however, make them no less a friend. So we accept what time  and  comfort  they can give us ...cherish the precious m...

GROWING TOMATOES...YELLOWING OF LOWER LEAVES

Image
This information found in a very informative article online seems to somewhat explain why my tomatoes have no leaves, yet seem to make a normal, even heavy, crop of fruit.  I grow my tomatoes against a panel of garden wire, and tie them to the wire as needed for support. A good part of the plant probably gets no sunlight at all during the day. __________________________________ "Indeterminate tomatoes are taller and requires stakes to support them. Their leaves will turn yellow due to age later in the season. Another thing to keep in mind is the way that tomato plants grow. As a tomato plant ages, it grows taller and gets more leaves at the top. As the top leaves grow larger and more numerous, they shade the lower leaves from sunlight. As a result, the lower leaves are not able to produce as much energy from photosynthesis. The plant will then draw mobile nutrients (like nitrogen, phosphorus, and magnesium) out of the bottom leaves and use them for growth of higher leaves (w...

My Froggy Friend

Image
A few years back, I decided to make a little pond in my back yard. I  dug out an appropriate sized hole, bought and installed a liner, and filled it with water. "Build it and they will come"... fit the occasion perfectly!! It was soon VERY occupied! I put a comfortable chair beside it, and it soon became my favorite spot to sit, whiling away the hours, watching and listening to the frogs. When I approached the pond. all the frogs would  jump into the water and hide (normal activity for frogs).  Then I started noticing one frog that was the last to leap. Before long,  instead of hiding, he started swimming to the side of the pond nearest me and looking directly at me. Soon when I sat down in the chair, he would swim towards me and climb out of the water onto a rock beside my chair. I started talking to him, and tickled his nose with a long grass blade. He would snap at it and try to catch it.  I got bolder and  tried petting him. He actually let me tou...
